Colorectal inflammation in dogs

Posted in : on 27-01-2026

A restless tummy, having to go outside more often than usual, and changes in your dog’s stools… These can be signs of colon inflammation, or colitis. It’s quite common in dogs, but what exactly is it? And how can you best help your dog? We tell you more.

What is colon inflammation in dogs?

The large intestine plays an important role in your dog’s digestion. This is where water and salt are extracted from the stool and where the stool itself is formed. If the colon becomes inflamed, it can lead to a variety of unpleasant symptoms. We call this colon inflammation or colitis. It causes your dog’s digestive process to fail.

Symptoms of colon inflammation in dogs

In a dog with colon inflammation or colitis, you may see several symptoms. Pay close attention to these signs:

  • Small amounts of stool, but going outside more often: Your dog has frequent urges, but only a little seems to come out.
  • Mucus or blood in the stool: This may indicate inflammation in the colon.
  • Difficulty defecating: Your dog may show pain or discomfort while defecating, such as pressing or adopting crazy positions.
  • Increased frequency of defecation: If your dog suddenly needs to go outside much more often than usual, it could be a sign of colitis.
  • Abdominal pain: Your dog may show signs of abdominal pain, such as a bloated belly or uncomfortable postures.

Do you recognize the above signs? If so, always contact a veterinarian.

What is the difference between colon and small intestine inflammation?

It is important to note that with small intestinal inflammation, your dog often produces larger amounts of stool and sometimes has to vomit. This is not typical of colon inflammation.

Causes of intestinal inflammation in dogs

There are several things that can cause colon inflammation in dogs. The most common causes are:

  • Nutrition: A sudden change in diet, food allergies or intolerances can upset the gut.
  • Stress: Dogs can be sensitive to stress. New situations, anxiety or changes in their environment can unbalance gut flora.
  • Infections: Bacteria or parasites may be the cause of inflammation.
  • Colorectal cancer: Although rare, colorectal cancer can also cause colitis. Therefore, it is always important to consult the veterinarian in case of symptoms.

Support for a dog with intestinal inflammation

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to support your dog’s recovery. Consider, for example:

  • Easily digestible diet: Feed your dog easy-to-digest food, such as special food for dogs with intestinal problems. This relieves the intestines. If necessary, support your dog with a supplement that contributes healthy digestion and intestinal flora, such as brewer’s yeast.
  • Probiotics: These “good” bacteria help restore balance to your dog’s intestines.
  • Reduce stress: Provide a calm environment for your dog and try to avoid stressful situations. Is your dog very stressful? Then support him with a soothing supplement.

With intestinal problems, it is important to look closely at your dog’s diet. Easily digestible foods and probiotics can help soothe and support the intestines. If symptoms persist, it is always a good idea to consult a veterinarian.

How long does colitis (colon inflammation) last in dogs?

Recovery from colonitis can vary from dog to dog. Sometimes it takes a few days, sometimes a few weeks. It is important to keep your dog calm and provide proper nutrition and care. However, if the symptoms persist, or if your dog really seems to be in a lot of pain, it is wise to seek veterinary care.

What if colon inflammation becomes chronic?

Sometimes inflammation in the colon can become chronic, meaning that the symptoms persist longer or keep recurring. In such a case, it is important to work with the veterinarian to establish a treatment plan. Chronic colitis can often be treated well, but sometimes it requires dietary adjustments or even medication.
